Photo: 3-year-old sore in my leg forced me into stealing - suspect arrested by RRS
A twenty-year old man arrested by the operatives of Rapid
Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly stealing a
mobile phone, has said that a festering sore in his right leg forced him into
the criminal act.
The suspect, Sunday Vincent, was apprehended by Policemen
after the suspect and others now at large, forcefully snatched a mobile phone
from his victim, a cab driver, (name withheld) at Ojota Motor Park, on Monday,
August 8th 2016.
The victim stated that the suspect and his gang members
beckoned at him to stop along the road.
"They pretended as if they wanted to board the cab.
And all of a sudden, they asked me to pull over that they were no longer going.
As I parked the car, my mind told me to check my phone where I kept it, but I
didn't see the phone again. Then I shouted for help, which attracted the RRS
operatives patrolling around the scene to come closer. As they sighted the
policemen approaching, they all took to their heels. Immediately, the Police
ran after them and caught the suspect
while others managed to escape," the victim explained.
On his arrival at the RRS's Headquarters, the arrested
suspect confessed that he was forced to commit the crime because he was
desperately looking for money to cure his three-year old sore in his right leg.
According to him, "I was injured about three years ago
when I was a bus conductor. Since that time I had been nursing the sore. I had
spent all my life savings on it. When helps were no longer forthcoming from
anywhere, I deliberately committed the offence because I must cater for my
well-being and continue to treat the sore... Although, after I was caught, I realised that I had
committed offence against God and Humanity. If I had known, I would have chosen
another means to look for money rather than taking to stealing."
The arrested suspect told the investigator that his
receiver, Samuel Ajekigbe, was his benefactor who accommodated him when he had
no place to live. Upon confessing this, the Policemen immediately picked-up
the receiver at his residence, 38, Oyinbo Orunmila Street, Unity Estate in Ojodu.
In his words, Ajekigbe, noted that the suspect only told
him he saw the phones on the ground on his way home.
"I met the suspect about five years ago. He was my
neighbour at Isheri-Olofin. After I packed out of the house, we lost contact.
All of our sudden he just showed up at my new resident at Unity Estate seeking
for accommodation. I took pity on him to accommodate him under my roof. But to
my surprise, I never knew he was stealing those phones. He only told he found
them on the ground on his way home. Then, I decided to help him to sell them
for N8,000. And out of that money, he gave me just N2,000," he added.
U.S. donates an additional $37 million to assist Northeast Nigeria
Following a trip to Maiduguri at the center of the Boko Haram insurgency this week, USAID’s Office for
Foreign Disaster Assistance Director Jeremy Konyndyk announced $37
million in new funding to support additional humanitarian assistance for
people affected by the conflict and severe food insecurity in Nigeria
and throughout the Lake Chad Basin.
At a press conference Wednesday, August 10, at the Nigerian Emergency Management
Agency, Konyndyk said the funding for assistance implemented by
international NGOs and UN agencies brings the total USAID humanitarian
support for the region to $318 million since last year. The United
States is the single largest humanitarian donor to the region.
"The United States is committed to supporting Nigeria to ease this
humanitarian crisis,” Konyndyk said, and help sustain this vulnerable
population until they can resume livelihoods upended by conflict.
Despite gradually improving security conditions, the humanitarian
situation remains dire. Throughout the region, approximately 5 million
people need emergency food assistance and 2.5 million people are
displaced.
"These issues are enormous," Muhammad Sani Sidi,
director general of the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency said, but
added we are working toward a "full recovery," including job skills
training for the displaced.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit back at Jose Mourinho
Cristiano Ronaldo appears to hit out at Jose Mourinho after Mourinho criticizes him on Portuguese TV
Ronaldo was stretchered out of the field in the first half due to a knee injury in the match and came out in the final minutes of extra time to bark instructions at his teammates- to inspire them to hold on to their 1-0 lead. But Mourinho , who weeks ago claimed Ronaldo wasn't in his top three players of all time , criticized Ronaldo , saying his touch line antics didn't do his team any favors at all.
'Ronaldo didn't help in any way by doing that in the final few minutes of the Euros final,' the United manager told Portugal's SporTV. There were 11 players on the pitch doing their job, and the person in charge of directing them was the coach.
‘I saw it as an overload of emotion from someone who saw that the team was just minutes away from achieving an objective which everyone wanted.'
‘He lost a little emotional control, not that that's a bad thing, but what my experience tells me is that it is in these moments, when important decisions might need to be made, that the players are lost in their own little worlds.’
Ronaldo appears to have bit back at his former Real Madrid manager as he took to his Instagram account to post the picture above, which shows him celebrating the European trophy with team-mates Bruno Alves, Pepe and Andre Gomes. He captioned the picture with the words: ‘Quick remind’.
